IPv6 Address Scopes & Types

Unlike IPv4, where a device usually has a single IP address, an IPv6 interface almost always possesses multiple IP addresses simultaneously, each serving a different "Scope" or boundary limit.

Primary IPv6 Address Types

Address Type Starting Prefix IPv4 Equivalent Routing Scope / Description
Global Unicast2000::/3Public IP AddressesGlobally routable on the public Internet. These are standard public addresses assigned by ISPs.
Unique Local (ULA)fc00::/7 (usually fd00::/8)Private IPs (e.g., 10.x.x.x)Routable only within a private organization. Will be dropped by public Internet routers.
Link-Localfe80::/10APIPA (169.254.x.x)Automatically generated on every IPv6 interface. Routable only on the immediate physical network link. Used heavily for neighbor discovery and router communication.
Multicastff00::/8Class D (224.x.x.x)Used to send a single packet to multiple specific destinations simultaneously. Note: IPv6 does not use "Broadcast" addresses; Multicast replaces it entirely.

Special Use IPv6 Addresses

Address Name / Designation Purpose
::1/128Loopback (Localhost)Used by a device to send traffic to itself (equivalent to IPv4 127.0.0.1).
::/128Unspecified AddressUsed as a source address while a device is requesting an IP configuration (equivalent to IPv4 0.0.0.0).
::/0Default RouteDirects traffic to the default gateway for unknown destinations.
